Let All Who Are Hungry Come and Eat
As you know, over the course of the 2014-2015 year, New Frontier USY has tackled hunger within each of our communities through YES WE CAN: An Initiative to End Hunger. This initiative has given USYers the opportunity to not only gain knowledge and insight on the issue, but also analyze its importance and act upon it as a member of both the Jewish community and the world. In carrying the initiative back to each of our communities, by running food drives and programming, we have worked towards our goal of collecting 1800 pounds of canned food by May 2015 and increasing hunger awareness.
With the approach of Passover, we look to the bitter times of our past. During the days of Pharaoh and throughout history, the Jewish people have experienced times of serious oppression and poverty. We reflect upon the trials and tribulations, our ancestors bravely faced and compare these to our present state: a time when the majority of us has a roof above our heads and do not struggle to put food on the table, and we recount our blessings. But, many are not as lucky. Many in our communities still live each day without knowing when their next meal will be; many sit through work and school each day on an unbearably empty stomach. The question remains: what can we do to help those who struggle to feed themselves and their family?
I challenge you to become an agent of change in your local community. Donate the Chametz that you were planning on getting rid of. Even more, as you find yourself in the supermarket during the holiday, pick up an extra food item for someone else. To you, a meal may mean hardly anything, but to others it may mean the world.
This year, as we surround ourselves with family, friends, and neighbors at a Seder of Matzah Ball Soup, Charoset, and other delicious treats, let’s read the words of the Haggadah as a call to action. Not a single person should have to go without food. Let’s work together to put an end to hunger, and finally “let all who are hungry come and eat.”
